Javier Vilariño is the founder and Capital Member of Vilariño & Associates LLC with a practice focused on representing insolvent debtors in complex corporate reorganization proceedings, representation of Chapter 7 trustees, representation of creditors and creditors’ committees, and active participation in providing continuing legal education bankruptcy programs for attorneys.
Prior to commencing his private practice, Javier worked for approximately five years at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico where he served as a law clerk for two of the four bankruptcy judges. As part of his duties, he counseled the judges on federal and state law issues as they pertain to complex corporate reorganization proceedings and in proceedings at the First Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel.
Javier’s legal career began as an Attorney for the Department of Justice of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. As part of the Bankruptcy Unit of the Federal Litigation Department, he represented the Puerto Rico Treasury Department and other agencies in numerous local and stateside bankruptcy proceedings. Subsequently, he became a Staff Attorney for the Chapter 12 & 13 Trustee for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Mr. José Carrión. Prior to establishing his own firm, Javier worked as a Member of Ferraiuoli LLC Bankruptcy Practice Group specializing in bankruptcy and creditors' rights litigation.
In 2010 he was appointed Secretary of the Consumer Bankruptcy Subcommittee of the Puerto Rico Local Bankruptcy Rules Revision Committee. Javier regularly lectures on bankruptcy matters at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law and at the Inter American University School of Law. Highly sought for his expertise in bankruptcy and federal litigation, Javier teaches continuing legal education seminars to attorneys and other professionals for various institutions including the Puerto Rico Bar Association, the Puerto Rico CPA Association, the CLE program for the Inter American University School of Law, the Federal Bar Association and the Judicial Academy of the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico.
