Javier Vilariño

Javier Vilariño is a Capital Member at Vilariño & Associates LLC where he specializes in providing bankruptcy advice and consultation to debtors, creditors, trustees and distressed companies. Before creating the firm, he was a Member of a local large law firm where he specialized in bankruptcy and creditors' rights litigation. Mr. Vilariño worked at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico for approximately five years and served as a law clerk for two of the four bankruptcy judges. As part of his duties, he counseled the judges on federal and state law issues as they pertain to complex corporate reorganization proceedings and in proceedings at the First Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel.

Mr. Vilariño’s legal career began as an Attorney for the Department of Justice of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as part of the Bankruptcy Unit of the Federal Litigation Department, where he represented the Puerto Rico Treasury Department and other agencies in numerous local and stateside bankruptcy proceedings. Afterwards, he became a Staff Attorney for the Chapter 12 & 13 Trustee for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Mr. José Carrión.

From 2010 to 2012, he was appointed Secretary of the Consumer Bankruptcy Subcommittee of the Puerto Rico Local Bankruptcy Rules Revision Committee. Mr. Vilariño has lectured bankruptcy matters at the University of Puerto Rico Law School and at the Interamerican University Law School; and teaches continuing legal education seminars to attorneys and other professionals in the topic of bankruptcy litigation; and has lectured for the Puerto Rico Bar Association, the Puerto Rico CPA Association, the CLE program for the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico Law School, the Federal Bar Association, the American Bar Associtation and the Judicial Academy of the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico.
